Compostable vs Recyclable Cups: Which Should Your Cafe Choose?
June 24, 2025 · 5 min read

Cafe owners often ask which is better: a compostable cup or a recyclable one. There is no universal winner. The right answer depends entirely on the waste infrastructure available in your city.
Compostable cups
Best when your city has curbside or commercial compost collection. A BPI certified paper cup with a PLA lining composts cleanly and reduces landfill volume. It is also the strongest visual signal to eco conscious customers.
Recyclable cups
Best when compost collection is not available but PET recycling is. A rigid PET cold cup can genuinely re enter the material stream, provided lids and straws are removed. Recyclable hot cups are much harder to recover because of the plastic lining, so the compostable case is usually stronger for hot service.
Split streams do not work
Do not run compostable hot cups and recyclable cold cups in the same shop unless you have a dedicated bin for each and clear signage. Guests default to landfill when they are unsure, and mixed streams contaminate whichever program you invested in.
The reusable option
The lowest impact cup is the one that gets washed and used again. If you have a dish pit, offer a 10 to 15 cent discount for reusable cups and price your compostables as the default rather than the eco upsell.
Bottom line
Call your hauler before you order. If they compost, go compostable. If they only recycle PET, go recyclable. If they do neither, focus on reuse and reducing cup count per drink.
